The Egg Harbor Township Police Department is accepting applications for Full-Time and Part-Time Communications Officers/Public Safety Dispatchers.

Applicants possessing current New Jersey 9-1-1 Telecommunicator and Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certifications are preferred.  Applicants who are not currently certified must be eligible and willing to obtain the required certifications within the established time-frame.

Job Description

Under the direction of a Communications Supervisor, Communications Officers receive and process emergency and non-emergency requests for police, fire, and emergency medical services. Communications Officers are responsible for obtaining accurate information, entering calls for service into the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, dispatching appropriate public safety resources, communicating with field personnel, and maintaining required records.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Receiving emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and requests for police, fire, and emergency medical services.
  • Determining the nature and priority of calls for service, obtaining pertinent information, and accurately entering information into the Computer-Aided Dispatch system.
  • Dispatching and communicating with appropriate police, fire, and emergency medical service personnel.
  • Monitoring and documenting dispatch activity and maintaining accurate records of public safety communications.
  • Receiving and processing requests from field personnel for driver, vehicle, warrant, criminal history, and other authorized information through applicable local, state, and national information systems.
  • Completing required records, logs, and files associated with calls for service and communications activity.
  • Providing routine public information when authorized and referring requests for confidential or restricted information to the appropriate personnel.
  • Maintaining a calm, professional, and reassuring demeanor while communicating with callers during stressful and emergency situations.
  • Obtaining accurate addresses, locations, callback information, and other details necessary to ensure an appropriate and timely emergency response.
  • Screening and prioritizing calls and initiating the appropriate course of action.
  • Learning and utilizing the various computer, telephone, radio, recording, information, and communications systems used by the Police Department and Communications Center.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must:

• Be a United States citizen.
• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Possess a valid New Jersey driver's license.
• Successfully complete a written examination.
• Successfully complete a typing proficiency assessment.
• Possess New Jersey Emergency Medical Dispatch and 9-1-1 Telecommunicator certifications, or obtain       the required certifications within the time-frame established by the Department.
• Successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation.
• Be of sound moral character.
• Successfully complete an oral interview.
• Be able and willing to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required.

Preference may be given to qualified Egg Harbor Township residents.
